One day last week Cliff and I decided that we were craving fresh seafood and an ocean breeze so Sunday we  headed to Charleston, SC for three days away from his fire /rescue pager tones and a garden that needs attentions.  We always stay at the same Holiday Inn.  He does the driving.  I tag along for the good times.  He chose a different route from Murphy this time.  Instead of the Asheville quagmire, we meandered through more mountainous terrain and slower back roads for the few few hours, but we didn't stop and stretch as much as usual and the next morning my joints didn't like me.  He was stiff and achy.  Motrin and Tylenol were my friendly companions all day.

Morris Island lighthouse.................

Typical tourists!!!
This lighthouse was only accessible by boat.  We enjoyed it from the shore.
The half-mile walk was unique.  Most of the trek was paved and adorned with messages and graffiti.

Fresh seafood salad on an open patio at The Crab Shack
Later that day we stopped for ice-cream where I spotted.................
a hot red VW with my sister's name on it! I tapped on the window and asked the woman's permission to snap a picture.  She was so friendly and cordial!  I didn't want her to think I was taking a picture of her tag to report her to the police.

We try to visit historic sites and buildings.  Online I read the best time is the first couple of hours after opening.  By noon and into the afternoon the crowd s gather.  We parked and walked the Battery to the Edmondston-Alston House overlooking the Charleston Harbor.  Cliff and I were the only people for the first tour at 10 am.  My kind of tour!  From its piazza, General P.T. Beauregard watched the fierce bombardment of Ft. Sumter on April 12, 1861, signaling the start of the Civil War. An excellent tour.

On the back porch we sat on a "joggle" board made of heart pine.  Back in those days, ladies found that their hips hurt after riding horses so before and after riding they sat on this joggle board to loosen the hip muscles and relieve the discomfort.  You bounce up and down and sway back and forth on the board for about 15 minutes to lubricate the joints.
                                       original cobblestone side streets
                                     canopied walk along the Battery
One of the many tour guides.  This man really enjoyed his role.  Dressed as a pirate with a colorful live parrot on his arm, he had everyone's attention.
Tuesday evening we visited our favorite outdoor restaurant for seared scallops, french fries, and coleslaw to end our get-away.
