My little Carolina wrens have built their first seasonal nest. Construction took place just a few days ago, just in time before this approaching storm system is predicted to bring all modes of severe weather. Last year my canvas porch swing was up when the couple began building the nest and chose the swing. During the storm the nest with eggs was blown out of the swing and thrown to the woods. That broke my heart so this year when I began using used my swing I brought it in each evening to avoid that from happening again. I hope this nest is more secure as this storm comes through tonight. This afternoon I moved the flower pots and vegetable containers back into the shed, placed the garden chairs in the she-shed by the big garden, and hopefully secured everything that could become airborne. All day the winds have been 15-18 mph with stronger winds expected through the night. No rain yet today. The heavy line is due around 9 tonight. Storms through the night are not fun.
I had a tree guy come out at 9 this morning and flag a bunch of trees, some that I chose and others that he pointed out had blight and needed to come down. Later this week he'll cut them down, cut them up and haul them away. Branches that are dangling or too close to the roof, he'll trim. Looking forward to having things open up for a better air flow and more sun. Every four or five years we'd had a few trees removed so it due again. Oh, yes and this tree guy is going to dig two new holes and put up my new bluebird houses for me! He'll bring his auger. I have to buy two 4x4 treated posts to screw my new houses to but first I have to assemble the houses. I bought them on Amazon.
They're made of pure solid wood with copper around the entrance so the mean ornery squirrels can't chew the holes bigger. This frigid winter the squirrels chewed every birdhouse opening large enough that they could carry dead material in and nest in it. I'll post now and go make the first house.
I'm back...........just build the first one. I love this !
Ten minutes to build the first one because I put the back piece on upside down. A fifty-fifty chance of getting it correct the first time and I blew it This is why I don't play the lottery..
