Sometime between going to bed Thursday night and making breakfast Friday morning my refrigerator gave up and died.  The milk started getting warm, water dripped from the ice-maker onto the floor, the ice-cream was soft.  Back up to Sunday when I pulled a 5.5 pound free-range chicken from the freezer with plans to cook it in the slow cooker Thursday to supply me with plenty of chicken for the predicted deep freeze coming this way.  Thursday I made my rub, rubbed it all over the chicken, cut fresh rosemary from outside to stuff inside the cavity and placed it in the cooker.  I had to borrow Janice's cooker because mine is a 6-quart which is too small for the hefty bird.  Plugged it in and set it on High for 6 hours at 9:30. Then noticed an hour later the pot wasn't even warm.  Moved the cooker to a different plug and check 45 minutes later.  Still no heat.  Stuck the whole ceramic vessel back in the fridge because now it was too late to cook it.  I went to Wal-mart and purchased my own  7-quart because now I needed to cook it Friday.

Friday morning....The refrigerator temperature showed it was 37 degrees and the freezer was -2, but the milk container was not cold and the air felt warmer than it should.  Freezer foods were thawing and the ice in the ice-maker was melting.  Charlie and his dog walked down to check it out for me and confirmed that the compressor was done.  Kaput! I ran around to the neighbors borrowing coolers and purchasing bags of ice.

I couldn't sleep at all last night trying to fix this in my head with storm warnings and tension to handle this on my own.  Got up at 5:30 and made a list of things to try or best ways to handle this before the predicted ice, snow, temperature drops heading to Western N C.  Now it's just one day at a time for the next week.  I don't feel safe with the coolers stored out on the porch.  Raccoons are crafty creatures and bears have been know to tear things apart. At least I'm not sobbing now.  Challenging to handle every dilemma alone .  As soon as Harvey Jaxon Appliance store unlocked their door this morning at 9, I stepped inside with my sad story. The salesperson was so kind, listened to what I needed and didn't need then showed me 8 refrigerators  narrowing down to 3 that were what I liked.  I settled for a stainless steel Whirlpool 36" French door with bottom freezer, no water or ice dispensers on the door.  I never used them and now more refrigerators are being made without as more people are not using them either.  There were a lot to choose from. Ice is made in the freezer and falls into the container. We're hoping for a Friday delivery.  Trucks will not be delivering Monday or Tuesday and according to road conditions, maybe I can have it delivered Friday.  Hopefully, I can sleep more restfully tonight and handle tomorrow with mre calm and energy.
