I have so much I feel I want to accomplish here on the homestead.  I'm waking naturally around 5:30 and after stretching and wiggling, I can jump out of bed to face the day by opening the kitchen door and listening to the whippoorwills' song fill the still dark forest.  When the air is warm enough, I sit on the porch steps or my chair and let their concert serenade me before they detect the morning awaking and cease their chorus.  All thoughts of how much needs to be done here are gone............... Cliff asked me if I would sell our home and move to be closer to any of the children when he was gone.  My immediate answer was no.  This is where I find peace.  Little by little I'll get thing done.  The pollen is still very heavy so I can't pressure wash the porch yet.  What's left of the radio equipment is out in the garage and I'm waiting for an estimate on painting that room.  The garden is slow this year and the almanac says we're in ...

The wren parents had changed their modus operandi these past couple of days so I knew they were preparing to get those hungry teens out of the house, give them flying lessons, and lessons on surviving the wilds.  While making my lunch, I noticed more commotion and nest movement.    It's been very windy for four days.  Enough to ruffle the bird feathers.  Parents spent time advising and coaching from the porch and constantly watching the surroundings.  I got to watch up close at the kitchen window.    At first three fluffy babies wiggle out of the nest and sat together in the box when one bravely sat on the box edge looking around.  A parent perched on the porch rail talking and coaching.  This one was the dare devil......jumped in the air and flapped landing on the rail. The other two followed its lead.  The last one looked weaker and timid.  I noticed that last one tried to get back inside the nest but couldn't b...

Any guesses on what the most difficult thing to purge is? and I'm sure I'll come across more......................  First male hummingbird spotted on the back porch feeder at 9:05 yesterday morning.  Brought a smile to my face.

Since moving to North Carolina over 14 years ago, I've been gardening by the moon as other ancient cultures have done for years.  It is believed that water in both the ground and the plants are affected by the gravitational pull of both the sun and the moon, just like the ocean tides are.  So I print out the month-by-month Farmers Almanac calendar and stick it on my fridge along with photos, greeting cards, and other close-to-my-heart memorabilia.  The other day while scrolling for the April growing dates, I spotted an article under "the best days for......." calendar which lists best days for certain chores and tasks.  "Best Days to Wash You Cat"  !!!!  Who would ever attempt to wash a cat???? In the fall I dry and preserve some seeds from our favorite veggies and flowers.  Cliff's winner tomato is the True Black Brandywine, a great producer. He asked me to continue growing his tomatoes.  From the seeds I saved from last year, I started his...

A hummingbird was sighted in Warwick, RI on March 23!  Observer noted this is the earliest she has ever seen one.  Of course she had no nectar made or feeder out so quickly made the sugar solution, cooled it, and hung it out.  I hung two out on Saturday, one on the back porch in sight from Cliff's recliner and the other at the kitchen window.  The nesting Carolina wren in my back porch swing was thrown out during the severe thunderstorm we had over the weekend.  The pillows had been blown out of the swing and tossed over the rails.  So sad.  Yesterday the wrens build their new nest in one day in the geranium window box.  It was amazing to watch them put leaves and other materials together so quickly.  Nature is amazing.  Plants and animals want their species to survive so they keep producing.  Tonight and tomorrow night will be in the low thirties but I can't bring the geraniums in the house now.  I may try to lay a ...
Good thing I'm fairly stable and mostly sane.....................  United Healthcare sent a check for $219.00 to the Estate of Clifton Lucht for over payment.  Our bank couldn't cash or deposit it because  of the words "Estate of". The teller said all they have to do is re-issue the check to Clifton Lucht.  Nope.  wrong!!  United Healthcare sent me a letter stating that I needed to show proof that I have the legal right to claim the refund of $109.50!!! where did they come up with that amount? so I need to send 1. copy of certified court papers or 2.  Letters of authority or administration or 3.  Small Estate Affidavit or 4.   Letter of Testamentary If you do not have these papers, just please fill out the Premium Refund Card.   Soo it goes from legal court documents to JUST fill out this card!!  The form just says that I promise to give the refund to the proper person!!! Cliff taught me to copy everything, date it, ...
