The wren parents had changed their modus operandi these past couple of days so I knew they were preparing to get those hungry teens out of the house, give them flying lessons, and lessons on surviving the wilds. While making my lunch, I noticed more commotion and nest movement.
It's been very windy for four days. Enough to ruffle the bird feathers.
Parents spent time advising and coaching from the porch and constantly watching the surroundings. I got to watch up close at the kitchen window.
At first three fluffy babies wiggle out of the nest and sat together in the box when one bravely sat on the box edge looking around. A parent perched on the porch rail talking and coaching. This one was the dare devil......jumped in the air and flapped landing on the rail.
The other two followed its lead. The last one looked weaker and timid. I noticed that last one tried to get back inside the nest but couldn't because its wings were spread open. It should have backed in.
It looks scrawnier than the other with its disheveled feathers. Finally it took a chance, flapped and left to follow the others.
Now it seems so quiet on the porch. Tonight is going to be the coldest night, 34 downtown so probably closer to 30 for us. The birds will probably cuddle in the woodpiles. For days we've had low humidity and gusts to 25 mph. I haven't walked. It's 64 with beautiful bright sunshine now but the pollen burns your eyes. After this front passes through, the wind will be more normal but the next ten days show some rain every day. At least now that the birds have flown the nest, I can pressure wash the porch then wait for sunshine to dry it so I can stain. I may not get to garden this year if there is no break in the rain pattern. It's okay. Can't win them all.
