Sometime around the third week of July we notice that the hummingbirds' behavior deteriorates.  They become more territorial and combative.  When I sit out with my coffee, the morning usually begins with one very bold hummingbird fluttering in my face before going to the feeder.

Afternoons are entertaining as the four or five expend their energy darting and chasing each other away from the multiple feeders.  We watch as one hummingbird perches its teeny feet on a bare thin branch with its head bobbing frantically in all directions daring the others to land on his feeder.  They chitter and flutter their feathers generating the noises we hear.  The other day I happened to be at the kitchen window when two were in a heavy chase and the male embedded his beak into the screen mesh.  He struggled for about 15 seconds while the other bird hovered in mid-air watching before the male freed his beak.  We were concerned that he would damage his beak trying to break free.  I'm washing and refilling the feeders every other day now.  Watching them is better than TV.

In previous posts I whined about the Samsung refrigerator freezing up and blowing out the fan.  I noticed ice forming again a few weeks ago, only nine months since the last time.  Sears was having a great sale on refrigerators so we took advantage of the sale and bought a Kenmore which is made by LG.  Tuesday afternoon was the delivery date so  we crammed the freezer goods into the chest in the garage and pushed and finagled refrigerated goods in the dorm-size fridge on the back porch.  It was a good time to check dates on foods and pitch some of the "iffy" foods.  The Sears truck arrived.  The two men disconnected the waterline and moved the old fridge onto the back porch.  I washed the wall and the floor for the new fridge.  When the new fridge was lowered onto the dolly and unpacked, it was the wrong refrigerator.  The men moved the Samsung back to the kitchen and reload the wrong refrigerator.  Now we have a "frozen" refrigerator that has to be defrosted because the ice build-up was causing loud noises that indicated the fan would stop running.  We stuffed towels in, Cliff removed the back, and stood with the hair dryer aimed at the iceberg that caused all this trouble.  Our new delivery date is tomorrow.  We'll go through the drill again later tonight or tomorrow morning for the correct refrigerator.
