"Owl Lady and Turtleman"
Last night Cliff was at fire school again so I was flipping through the TV channels looking for something light and mindless without drama or adrenalin. I stopped on channel 4, which is our local Murphy broadcast station, when I heard a familiar voice. Even the face looked like someone I had seen before but couldn't place how I knew that woman. She and the gentleman wore white lab coats and stood behind a large table surrounded by herb mixtures. Suddenly it hit me who they were. They were the "owl lady" and her husband, "turtleman" who own and run The Whole Store in Ranger (20 yrs) where we buy all our pure fish oil and other supplements. They have a time slot each Thursday night when they talk about herbal medicine, promote a healthy organic lifestyle, and answer questions from their audience. At Wal-Mart and some other stores, in order to keep prices cheap, many vitamins and supplements come from countries where there are no safety standards and are processed with unsafe fillers and materials. It was so interesting to hear her talk about the old-fashioned remedies, how to make your own teas with different herb mixtures, and allow your body to heal itself. For years, Boni's mother has taken vinegar with honey each morning and evening for her arthritis and swears it has worked. Last night the "owl lady" recommended that same remedy for general health and well-being.
Remedies as simple as warm honey with lemon for a scratchy throat, chicken soup for a cold and congestion, and many others that we heard when we were growing up. They are such neat interesting people with common sense and I love talking to them when I go to their quaint little store.
What a winter so far. Everyone is struggling to get through it. I've started basil seeds growing in small pots on my window sill trying to force spring to get here. Had a dusting of snow again last night, may have more snow later in the week. Our meteorologist is carefully watching another system and feels it could bring snow to our area.....again. Will we go from storms and frigid temperatures right into hot humid air-conditioning?
